Mindfulness with Rumi, Purkey, and Marley
At Zen of Water I try to dedicated much of the content mindfulness. Michele and I are always looking for ways to get inspired to sit and meditate. It’s tough. And sometimes people need to be inspired. What I did here was put together an interesting combination of Rumi quotes and other uplifting inspiration.
So every so often, I will roll out some meditation inspiration for you.
For your Rumi purist, please look away. For others, you might find it interesting. I assembeled a bunch of Rumi mindfulness quotes in a poem. If one quote gives you a 1x dose, why not try six quotes and give you a 6x does? This quote by William Purkey is so up-lifting. He has the perfect last name for someone so up-lifting. And then I found a very rare quote by Bob Marley. I found this piece of writing to describe a heart broken wide open with love. I’m totally inspired. Hope you are too.
Mindfulness with Rumi
Your task is not to
seek for love, but merely
to seek and find all the
barriers within yourself
that you have built against it.
Stop acting so small.
You are the universe
in ecstatic motion.
What you seek is seeking you.
Don’t grieve. Anything you lose
comes round in another form.
You were born with wings,
why prefer to crawl through life?
When I am with you, we stay up all night.
When you’re not here, I can’t go to sleep.
Praise God for those two insomnias!
And the difference between them.
You Gotta Dance Like
“You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.”
― William W. Purkey
Once in Your Life
“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

Rebirth of Gaea – Flowing Meditation
from Jesse Michael Newman
New York-based artist Jesse Michael Newman has worked on multiple films nominated or shortlisted for Academy Awards and projects accepted to the permanent collections of the MOMA and Whitney.
His latest piece, REBIRTH of GAEA, is an epic visual tapestry delicately interweaving reflections
on the environment and spirituality through the rich imagery of Greek Mythology.
“A visual love letter for my daughter.
This video provides a layer-by-layer deconstruction of “Flowing Meditation,” a small part of REBIRTH of GAEA.” ~ Jesse Michael Newman
REBIRTH of GAEA is an epic visual tapestry delicately interweaving reflections on the environment and spirituality through the rich imagery of Greek Mythology. My daughter Emma has had a deep connection to the environment for as long as I can remember. As she grew older and became enchanted with Greek Mythology, I decided to show my support for her interests by creating REBIRTH of GAEA, depicting her as the Goddess of Earth.
The incredible music, “You’re Too Late Satan” by Worm Is Green, is available on iTunes and Amazon.
“Jesse Michael Newman -This was created using Adobe After Effects. The end result is a printed piece, but I use what is traditionally a video application to do the compositing.”
As Bird Wings
Your grief for what you’ve lost lifts a mirror
up to where you’re bravely working.
Expecting the worst, you look, and instead,
here’s the joyful face you’ve been wanting to see.
Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes.
If it were always fist or always stretched open, you would be paralyzed.
Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding.
the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated
as bird wings.
This being human is a guest-house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture.
Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
